you are completely right in being suspicious. The Africans often use titles such as reverend or pastor, to instill a the potential victims with a false sense of dealing with someone honourable.
Apart from that, I have not heard of any e-mails with this kind of story. Could you post the mail here, so that we can take a look at it?

Hi i also found a rental listing from Theresa Lunner for an apt. in Norwalk! she says she had to relocate to west africa with her family and needs to rent her home. Yesterday, I repliled and gave her my name and city i live in! can she do anything with this? I havent heard from her.

Basically all of the online crooks are looking for quick and easy money. All they want you to do is send them money – preferably with Western Union – once they have picked up the cash, your money is gone!
Trying to set up anything with your personal details is too risky, time consuming and may not work for them.

that sort of basic information cannot be used to do much. You have to remember, these people want quick, easy money from victims who willingly give it to them.
Using your details to get money elsewhere is too much trouble and work.

I figured this was a scam! I am looking for an apartment and decided to reply to her on craigslist..and as soon as I read that she was leasing a studio city apartment from Africa I became suspicious! She left a link for me to see that she was running a legit “charity” so as a graphic designer I can tell this is no website. With that said my roommate was caught in a scam from a person sending her checks to cash threw her bank and turned out they were bad checks and she ended up having to pay the +$2000 the scam costed! They withdrew all the money from her parents bank accounts. Anyways this seemed to good to be true! and thank God I attempted some research to find this site! Thanks soo much! Tamara, I got the exact email you did when enquiring into a place in Burbank. Word for word! I can’t believe how vulnerable I was to think the offer could be real. Thank god for forums like this which can help people out when the red flags go up. I am very glad I did some research on ‘Pastor Theresa Lunner’ before sending any of my hard earned money!
I was looking for a job on craiglist.com and came across a personal assistant position making $500 a week. The lady e-mailed me back stating that she owns an oil rig company and currently resides in new york, but needs an assistant to help her while she is out of the country, doing chores, phone calls, errands such as donating toys/money to an orphanage in which she needs my contact information to send me a money order to pay for this. She would like to chat on yahoo live but is unable to speak over the phone due to a poor ear drum? Would this be something I should be suspicious about?

to be honest, I don’t have that experience with Craig’s list, but I am always suspicious about online jobs where you have to cash in money for some person or company who says they are not able to do it themselves. If this not the case, then maybe the lady is legitimate.
You would need to ask a few more questions to make sure the job is real. Do you have a phone number, address or anything which would help to confirm the lady is who she is?

I saw this same listing on Craigslist.. and I was wondering the same exact thing. I have been in contact with her.. and I looked up the first errand she wanted me to run (Orphanage Motherless Charity Home) which is not even legitimate. Also.. she asked me to register for Yahoo! Chat so that we could communicate.. and in the “Buddy Profile” or whatever and it says “Male” and location is “Pensecola Beach”. So, I have become very suspicious and nervous almost because she has my resume and knows my address and phone number.

I just got finished trying to find something on this “professional” seeking a PA and I think if several of us are suspicious then its something to be cautious of. I responded with a request for some sort of verification of company or job title, respectfully but did not divulge the additional info she asked for. She does have my resume though and although I was not asked to join a Yahoo! chat, the fact that the sex and location are off is definitely a red flag.

Yes I too got the email about the personal assistant add……. It’s funny how she can talk via yahoo chat but can’t talk over the phone! I looked back 2 days after I responded to the craiglist add to show my friend what the job was and it had Been deleted! I too I’m concern because now the person has all my information
With Yahoo chat, he/she does not have to talk. Any kind of accent he/she may have would be instantly recognized.
About your information – It would depend on exactly what they may have from you. If it’s just address, telephone number, etc. There is not much they can do with that. If you have given them any personal information, such bank details or social security, I would talk to your bank about or the social security people to make sure you know what you can do in case someone tries anything crooked.

I too received an email stating I received the position. The thing that I was concerned about was the fact that she had my resume but was asking me for the same information I already provided in my resume (name/address/telephone number). The “lady” I received my email from was Kimberly Cole. Also, stating the website was under construction made me a bit leary. Basically any way of verifying if this was legitamate she stated there was something wrong with, for example the website, or she couldn’t hear so she couldn’t talk on the phone. This is definitely a scam!!!!!

first of all wait until a check actually arrives. I would ask your Bank if they could tell if the check is a forgery or if the account actually has money on it.
If it’s from a foreign Bank, I would not cash it in.
Usually, they bounce and you have lost your money. More than likely, they will send a check with more than the agreed sum to you, with instructions to send the rest to someone through Western Union.
As far as the information is concerned, there is not much they can do with it. They are interested in quick, easy money. Preferably from someone who is willing to send it to them.

I have also recieved and been emailing a davis peterson for the pa job and wanted me to run toys to the same orphange he said that the check was in the mail to cash it at my bank and keep out my part of the money and buy toys with the rest. i knew this was to good to be true. he sent me the same email stating to chat on yahoo he was out of the country but it was word from word as he other ladies.

I also applied for the PA job and recieved the same e-mail with the same exact typing and grammatical errors, however, my guy’s name was Harrold Wayne and was located in New York. I have heard of similar scams where they send you a money order but it has already been cashed. Your bank cashes it and then when they find out they can’t collect on it, you are left holding the bag for the total amount. That would explain the e-mail’s insistance about completing the task under time constraints…less chance the bank will catch it. What I am worried about is that they have so much of my personal information…any advice?

judging from the comments which are coming in here, this looks like it is pulling a lot of money for the crooks.
In times like this, people are looking for alternatives to earn some extra money and jobs like this are obviously attractive, because you don’t have fixed hours to do it.
This is exactly what the Africans, it is usually Africans, actually want. They rely on their victims actually sending them money voluntarily and any story will do, if it gets the victims to do that.

The answer you got, confirms my suspicions that these people are doing the check fraud scam.
It works this way: You get a check drawn on a foreign bank. It is made out to more than the sum agreed upon, in this case more than the 500 $.
You cash the check in and send the rest somewhere else, usually with Western Union and to a country in Africa, but in this case I have not yet any details on where the money has to be sent. But that should not take long until someone gives us information on that.
The problem is, the check is either a forgery or is not covered. So it will default and the person who cashed the check in, runs the risk of being charged with fraud and other things.
This is very risky!
Fortunately, in your case, it looks as though you have recognised it for what it is – a nasty scam to catch poeple who are looking for extra cash.

I recently replied to an add for a personal assistant to a guy by the name of Gam Toin who claims to be a lawyer but does charity and other work on the side. After speaking with him a few times and sending him my resume he decided to give me a shot and emailed me my first assignment. The assignment which i am a little suspicious of entails buying a list of toys that he will supply me with and dropping them off at this orphange. He said he would mail me a cashier’s check which I can take my pay for the week from and use the rest for the expenses. he asked for my contact information and I gave it to him which was my name, address, and phone number. Could this be a scam? Have you heard of this guy? I will not do anything until i am 100% sure it isn’t but it sounds a bit wierd. Your response is appreciated.

take a look at my last comment post and you can see how this works. There are a lot of people responding to these ads in Craigslist, because a lot of people are looking for ways to earn some extra money.
The problem is, ist is a fraud. I have explained how it works on my last comment, just above your post.
