There has been a decrease in the numbers of lottery e-mails during the last weeks. I doubt that it means that there is a shift away from that type of scam e-mail. I am sure we will be seeing it in circulation for some time to come.

All of these companies are regularly misused for lottery scams. Basically the crooks are using the brand names to try and achieve a higher trust factor.

Trust is a very hard thing to gain online. And as the crooks are not in a position to provide their own trust factor, they use the names of well know companies and public persons to lull potential victims into believing what they are offering is an honest offer or, as in this case lottery company.

A lottery crook comments on Crime Online

This morning I was notified of a comment waiting for moderation. The poster calls himself Dr. Evan Williams. he must have gotten that name from a bottle of whiskey.

The funny thing about this comment, was the fact that he said it was the bad victims who couldn’t reach the claiming requirements and complained they didn’t get any money.

Isn’t it shame there are so many bad people about these days?

Seriously, this must be an all time first. At least it is on Crime Online.

This prize is real and those people complaning could not meet up with the claiming requirement for this prize hence they began to blacklist our organisation in other to deprive others from benefitting from this golden opportunity.

Of course, the scam e-mails are sent out translated to other languages other than English. The African and other crooks have recognised that that there is potential in countries where English is not the main language.

The contact e-mail is translated to the target language, but other than that the rest of the scam is done in English. The crooks mostly are not able to talk or correspond in languages other than English. This is a weak point in the strategy which makes the effort to reach non-English speaking victims much harder. Fortunately, that is.

In the past, the crooks used software translators which do not produce natural translations. This message however is readable although the grammer and translation are not 100%. It is enough to get by on.

If it is enough for critical German readers, remains to be seen.

The April site search statistics show the whole span of the different fraud types.

Andreas Schranner has been used for the “next of kin” scam for the last few years and is obviously still popular with the Africans.

Hipson Scart is new and is the name used in the new “unsecured and guaranteed loan” scam. This shows that they have been pushing this one for the last couple of weeks.

The Zenith Bank is used mainly for “dormant accounts” and the Foundation de France is used to offer grants to individuals.

I wonder what May will bring? I’ll keep you posted.
