Over the last months a new kind of Advance Fee Fraud e-mail has been seen. The global financial crisis and the sub prime problems which started it all, have obviously created the basis for e-mails offering cheap credit up to 100 miliion USD.
The transfer agent scam is run by groups in Asia, eastern Europe, Russia and, of course, Africa. It is often used as the backend of phishing scams.

Believe it or not, this works as the back end of Phishing e-mails.
The crooks plunder the accounts from the phishing e-mails and transfer the money to the “Agent’s” account. He then cashes the money and sends it per Western Union to a receiver somewhere in another country.
Sure he gets 10% of the cash, but he also gets 100% of the trouble once his account has been traced by the police.
That means he will be arrested for fraud and anything else the police can come up with.
Sure he can prove that he transfered most of the money, due to the receipts from Western Union. Unfortunately the authorities usually count the “Agent” as one of the crooks. So he is the one who has to “pay” for all the crimes the crooks have commited.
Believe me I have spoken to enough victims to know that this is how it works.
