Occasionally I get e-mails, which at first look, could be real. This one looks very real. That is until I took a closer look at the header.

After more than 10 years following what African crooks are doing, I get to instantly recognise a 419 scam story when I see one. This is no different to any other scam e-mails doing the rounds, it just looks more believable.

Any business e-mail that comes from a freemail account is suspect. Even before you read it I recommend you trash it.

Anything that involves international transactions and African countries is more trouble than it’s worth. So my advice to you is to trash it, trash it, trash it ….

If you take a look at Wikipedia you will find an entry about Mr. Brumley. He was quoted to be a philanthropist and he died with several family members in a plane crash in 2003.

Now obviously this background is ideal for 419 scam crooks to misuse this information to put a bogus story about “lost” money in deepest Africa. Seeing that e-mails quoting money in Ouagadougou come in almost every day here, it does seem a favourite location for stories like this.

CNN kindly published the names of the passengers who died in the plane crash the crooks are referring to, which made the research for this e-mail easy.

AGCO Corp, an agricultural equipment manufacturer based in Duluth, Georgia, said its president and chief executive John Shumejda and senior vice president for sales and marketing Ed Swingle had died in the crash, Reuters reported.
