This one is using a real person’s background to promote this scam e-mail. I spoke to his assistant and she told me that his name is being used quite extensively at the moment.

Mr. Gore-Randall is the COO of HBOS, which makes him a public figure. HBOS wants readers and potential clients to see that they are dealing with qualified experts by posting short curiculum vitaes of their management, which is obviously a basis for trust building.

Unfortunately this kind of public information is often misused for the Advance Fee or 419 kind of fraud run by Africans.

Messages like this one show that the Iraqi conflict is still an ideal background for 419 scams. The stories are hardly researchable and the conflict is full of myths.

Does anyone know what an “obscured business suggestion” could be?

The funny thing about this e-mail is the sender address. Do you see it?

The so called Mr. Liu Yan is using an account with the name paulsmiths_uk@yahoo.co.uk.

Now why would he do that?

Because Liu Yan/Paul Smiths or what ever his name is, was just too lazy to set up a new account for his new scam message.

On the other hand, he has a localised Hong Kong Yahoo addresse as a so called private account. If that one is 006, how many accounts may he have there?

All of these companies are regularly misused for lottery scams. Basically the crooks are using the brand names to try and achieve a higher trust factor.

Trust is a very hard thing to gain online. And as the crooks are not in a position to provide their own trust factor, they use the names of well know companies and public persons to lull potential victims into believing what they are offering is an honest offer or, as in this case lottery company.

After more than 10 years following what African crooks are doing, I get to instantly recognise a 419 scam story when I see one. This is no different to any other scam e-mails doing the rounds, it just looks more believable.

Any business e-mail that comes from a freemail account is suspect. Even before you read it I recommend you trash it.

Anything that involves international transactions and African countries is more trouble than it’s worth. So my advice to you is to trash it, trash it, trash it ….

You can see it’s about the shortest scam e-mail which has ever arrived here. I don’t think you can make them shorter. The question is, would anyone actually believe this came from Microsoft?
